2 Things You Should Know about Your Home’s Air Filter

An air filter is a vital component to your HVAC system, preventing pollutants from entering your indoor air. These pollutants include dirt, dust, tree pollen, smoke and more. Choosing the right air filtration system for your HVAC system can make a huge difference in the quality of air circulating through your home. Without proper filtration, your indoor air quality can actually be worse than the outdoor air quality of where you live. But is a simple air filter all you need? What should you know about your home’s air filter?

1. Your Air Filter’s MERV Rating Determines Its Effectiveness

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Rating Value. This is an industry standard rating system that allows you to compare filters made by different manufactures. Don’t assume that a higher MERV rating means a better air filter though. Your filter rating should correspond with the requirement of your HVAC system. Using too high of a rating could damage your HVAC system while using too low of one will prevent you from getting the maximum level of clean air in your home.

2. The Air Filter Alone May Not Be Enough

An air filter is essential to helping maintain indoor comfort, but the filter that came standard with your HVAC system may not be enough to really improve your indoor air quality. Electronic air cleaners take an active role in trapping airborne pollutants, while air purifiers can be a better option for some homes. Humidity also plays a role in indoor air quality. If the air in your home is too dry, a humidifier can solve this problem. Lastly, UV germicidal lights play a role in effectively killing off the pollutants that were caught by your air filtration system.
