There are many heating sources available, and if you’re like most people, geothermal isn’t the first that comes to mind when you’re planning your new heating system installation. However, geothermal is one of the most energy efficient and inexpensive heating systems on the market today. With a limitless supply of heating energy and the option to use the same system for cooling in the summer, geothermal offers many benefits over traditional forced air or radiant heating.
Whether you’re interested in having a geothermal system installed in your home or you would simply like to learn more about what geothermal has to offer, call Boehmer Heating & Cooling today. Our Pittsburgh area geothermal technicians provide geothermal system installation, maintenance and repair to customers all over the area.
How Geothermal Heating Works
Geothermal heating is very simple in execution. The idea is that the ground carries a tremendous amount of warmth and energy, even in the coldest of months. To tap into that energy, your geothermal system will utilize a series of pipes circulating water and antifreeze through the ground. The coolant in those pipes gathers heat from the ground and then carries it to a heat pump. The heat pump then transfers the heat into air that will be circulated throughout your home via ductwork.
There are quite a few benefits to this system. First, geothermal heating is consistent – the ground always carries a certain degree of energy, even on the coldest of days. Second, it doesn’t require much fuel to operate beyond what the heat pump uses to circulate the heated air. Additionally, a geothermal heat pump can be flipped in reverse during the summer and will actually cool your house, using the same technology to transfer heat from inside to the water pipes outside.
Did you know that there are around 50,000 geothermal heat pumps installed in the United States each year? More and more people are turning to geothermal for their home’s heating and cooling. Although a geothermal heat pump systems costs more to install than an air source heat pump system, the difference is usually made up with the energy savings within ten years. And since geothermal systems are designed to last 25+ years and require little maintenance, they are a great investment for many homeowners. If you are thinking about replacing your HVAC system, ask your contractor if geothermal is a good option for your home.
Installation of a geothermal system can be expensive due to the cost of drilling or digging to install the necessary pipe loop on your property. If you live in an area that doesn’t freeze often, horizontal pipes can be used to draw heat from 4–5 feet underground. However, colder environments often require vertical piping which costs much more to install due to the depth of the drilling required.
After the piping is installed, a geothermal heat pump is added to the system. This heat pump can be calibrated for both winter and summer comfort control. Ductwork is also necessary to circulate the heated or cooled air once it has been produced by your heat pump.
Because your geothermal system will be used throughout the year, regular maintenance is very important. This service includes checking and replacing the filters in your heat pump and ensuring your ductwork is free of any cracks or gaps. The piping should also be laid in such a way that there is minimal risk of tree or bush roots reaching them. Regular maintenance checkups will ensure the pipes remain sound.
