Should My Air Conditioner Have an Odor to It?

You expect your stove to emit odors when cooking, or even your dryer if you use dryer sheets, but there’s never a good reason for any kind of smell to come from your air conditioning system in Mt. Lebanon, PA. In fact, if you are detecting an odor coming from your AC system, whether through the vents or from a component, it’s time to call your Boehmer Heating & Cooling expert for help.

What Do the Smells Mean?

Depending on the type of smell, there could be a few things going on. For example, a stale smell is typical of mold or mildew in your air conditioning system. Mold and mildew can grow on the inside of your ductwork, and as the air blows through the ducts, it will also blow the spores and the odor into your home.

Another smell to be aware of is a burning smell. If you detect a burning odor at any time emanating from your air conditioning system, turn the system off immediately and call for repair. A burning smell indicates that something electrical, either a wire or other electrical component, has gotten so hot that it is melting the material around it. As such, you can’t operate your air conditioner under these conditions.
