Why Good Insulation Is Necessary for Your Home

With temperatures in the 80s and 90s, you may be wondering why we would be talking about insulation. After all, insulation is a winter season thing, not a summer season thing, right? Not exactly. While insulation is most associated with keeping in warmth during the winter months, its function isn’t for that alone: it’s for slowing the transfer of heat. This is why having good insulation is important year-round, not just during the cold months. Still not sure how this affects you now? Let’s take a closer look.

The Movement of Heat

Heat moves in three different ways: convection, conduction and radiation. Heat will always seek out cool air; this is one of the basic laws of thermodynamics. This means that during the summer months, heat will try to move into the cool areas of your home not one way but in three different ways, all the time. If you have whole home cooling, that’s a lot of heat wanting to get into your home – and this is where insulation comes in.

Insulation forms a barrier that helps keep the cool air inside, but it also forms a barrier that significantly slows the transfer of heat from the outdoors into your cool living spaces. Without this barrier, or without good enough insulation, your air conditioner will be left to battle the heat that is trying very hard to get into your cool home.

Add Insulation to Your Home

There are several kinds of insulation products that allow trained experts to easily add more insulation to your home’s existing insulation in case you don’t have enough. Not sure what your insulation levels are? Our experts can conduct a home energy audit to assess whether or not you have enough insulation and if not, the best way to remedy that.

Call the experts at Boehmer Heating & Cooling today and ask us about performing a home energy audit on your home in Pittsburgh, PA.
